Mormonism Defined – 4. June, 2010

The following definitions should help you understand The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:

Abraham -

Atonement – The Atonement, brought about by Jesus Christ, provides the opportunity for fallen humans to overcome spiritual death (separation from God’s presence caused by sin) and physical death (separation of one’s spirit from his body, the natural end to a person’s life).  The Atonement bridges the gap between the demands of justice, which require that we be perfect to dwell with God, and the natural vulnerabilities of mankind.  The Atonement is comprised of the incomprehensible sufferings of Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the cross at Golgotha.  The promises offered by Christ’s Atonement include the ability for mankind to be forgiven for their sins, the resurrection of spirit and body in a perfect, immortal form after death

Disclaimer:  These definitions are written from my perspective.  These explanations are not officially endorsed by the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but I’ve done my best to represent the Church’s doctrines and practices as I have learned and experienced them.  For more insight, I refer you to the LDS Church’s scriptures.  The Bible Dictionary included at the back of the LDS edition of the King James Bible provides authoritative explanations of many of these teachings.
